District Library, Kaithal
Origin
Kaithal is an ancient city, dating back to Vedas period. Many ancient scriptures mention it as Kapisthala, kapi means Lord Hanumaan and sthala means abode. They combine to mean abode of Lord Hanumaan.In those times the region was abundant with lush green forests and the sacred river Saraswati passed through this region. This area was considered to be very sacred and many rishis and munis (saints) came here for mediation. They brought with them their cultural backgrounds and eventually many cultures flourished here.
Kaithal city was part of Karnal District and later Kurukshetra district until 1st November 1989 when it became the District headquarters of the Kaithal District.
The library was established as sub-divisional library in the year 1985 and was upgraded to the District Library status in the year 2001.
Building
The sub-divisional library was started in a rented building near City Police Station and continued to serve its users from this location till 1998. Then it was provided the present building rent free by the local administration temporarily as a new building for the library is under construction near Fire Brigade Station.
The library has single storey building. The central hall accomodates the stacks-cum-reading room. The office and the store flank on both sides of the central hall.
Location
The city of Kaithal is located on the NH 65 about 185 Kms. from the national capital Delhi and 125 Kms. (approx.) from state capital Chandigarh. The library is located on the Park Road opposite SDM residence.

The library has a rich collection of 12000+ books and monographs.
Membership
The library has 1000+ registered members till now.
Membership Security: - Adults Rs 500(Refundable) + Fee Rs 10(Non-Refundable)
- Children Rs 100
Information Technology
The library is equipped with 2 computers and is in the process of retro-conversing its collection to MARC21 using SOUL software.
Working Days and Work Hours
The library opens for public from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm
The library remains closed on Fridays and last Saturday of every month and all the gazetted holidays.
