District Library, Panchkula

Origin

Panchkula is a satellite city of Chandigarh, state capital of Punjab and Haryana. The origin of the name Panchkula is based on the five irrigation canals (in Hindi Kuls) that flowed through the region. The district Panchkula was formed on 15^th August, 1995 with the city Panchkula as headquarters.

The library was converted to the present status of a District Library in the year 2007 from the existing Sub-divisional library. The Sub-divisional library was established on Nov. 1986 and was functional from the Community Centre, Sector 7, Panchkula.

Building

The library occupies a rented building at Bal Bhawan, Sector 15, Panchkula. Before that it was operational for sometime at DC Office. The library is on the Ist floor of the building. It has a spacious hall with stacks on the one side and the librarian's room-cum-office and reading table on the other side. The building is spacious and is in the centre of densely populated but well planned sector 15 of the city. The building is surrounded by lush green lawns on all the sides, an ideal place for silent reading.

Panchkula is a satellite city of state capital Chandigarh. It is an district headquarter in Haryana and after Gurgaon it is the 2nd most important city in the state. The city is well planned and has been divided into sectors for administration purpose. The library is in Sector 15.

The library has a collection of 15882+ books.

Membership

The library has 800 registered members till date.

• Adults Rs 500(Refundable) + Fee Rs 10(Non-Refundable)
• Children Rs 100

Information Technology

The library has 2 Computers and is in the process of automation using SOUL, the library management software.

Working Days and Work Hours

The library opens for public from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm

The library remains closed on Fridays and last Saturday of every month and all the gazetted holidays.
