State Library, Ranchi


Origin

Ranchi is the capital of the Indian state of Jharkhand. Jharkhand was carved out of Chota Nagpur and Santhal Parganas divisions of neighbouring state Bihar on 15th November, 2000.

The library was established in 1953. Initially it started its services near Sahid Chowk, from a rented bulding. Later a new building was constructed by the State Government (Bihar at that time), and library was shifted here. Since then, from time to time, the building has been expanded many times to accomodate the ever expanding library collections and growing number of library users.

Building

The library has its own three storey main building and a newly constructed annex building.

Ground floor has the stack room, office, computer lab and reading room etc.

First floor has the readig room, book tacks and conference hall.

Second floor has a spacious reading room.

The newly constructed annex building is providing extra reading space for readers.

Separate sitting facility is available for boys and girls, in confirmity with the local culture.

Location

The library is located Near Firayalal Chowk (Albert Ekka Chowk), Sharda Babu Lane, behind Durga Baadi Mandir. It is about 4 Kms. from the ciry main railsay station, Ranchi Junction.

Collection

The library has a rich collection of 90,000+ documents in many languages.

The library has a valuable collection of reference books, a copy of the Constitution of India is its proud possions.

The library subscribes 10 newspapers in 2 languages i.e. English and Hindi and around 24 magazines.

Membership

The library has 8056 registered members.

The library offers annual membership for its lending section, with a nominal annual fee of Rs. 24/-, Rs. 50/- refundable security and Rs. 2/- registration fee. To become a member a user should duly fill and submit the prescribed form (attested from a local guarantor known to the applicant i.e. school/college principal, sarpanch/MC etc.) along with two recent passport sized photographs and an ID proof along with the requisite fee.

A registered member can borrow 2 books for 15 days.

Automation

The library has a computer lab with 10 pcs with internet access, but the library services are offered manually. The library premises are under CCTV surveylance and the library is solar powered. Xerox facility is also available for office use.

Working Hours

The libray opens from 9 am to 8 pm, Monday to Saturday, and is closed on gazetted holidays and Sundays.
