Rajkya Sarvajanik Zila Pustakalya (District Library), Alwar
Origin
Alwar is the district headquarter of Alwar district of Rajsthan. In British India it was spelt as 'Ulwar' and was a princely state. Starting with alphabet 'U' the state was always at the end of the list of states so a wise king changed the spellings to bring it to the top.
There are many theories about the origin of the name Alwar. According to one theory propounded by Cunningham the name has been derived from the Salva tribe as Salwapur. Then it became Salwar, then Halawar and eventually Alwar. According to another theory it was named Aravlpur (the city of Aravali), the hill range that passes through the region. One more theory ascribes the origin of the name to one called Alaval Khan Mewati. Still another theory mentions about a city of Alpur, founded in 1049 AD by Maharaja Kakil of Amer. It later became Alwar.
The library was started in 1975.
