Rajkya Sarvajanik Zila Pustakalya (District Library), Banswara
Origin
Banswara is the district headquarter of Banswara district of Rajsthan in India. It is the eastern part of the region called Vagad or Vagwar. There are two believes behind the origin of the name. It is said that it was named after a Bhil ruler called Basnia or Wasna who ruled this region. He was defeated and killed by Jagmal Singh who became the first Maharaval of the princely state. According to another theory it got its name because of the abundance of bamboo forests found in the area.
Banswara is also famous for the revolt by the Bhils under the leadership of Govindgiri and Punja against the British in November, 1913. Hunderds of them were shot dead at the Mangarh hillock. The place is famous as Mangarh DhamAfter independence this princely state merged with the State of Rajsthan and became a district in 1949.
