Rajkya Sarvajanik Zila Pustakalya (District Library), Bhilwara


Origin

Bhilwara is the district headquarter of the district by the same name in the Mewar region of Rajashtan. It is famous for its cloth indusry. There are different theories behind the name 'Bhilwara'. According to one such theory the city has got its name due to the abundance of 'bhil tribes' who inhabited this region. Another theory advocates that there used to be a mint in the city that minted coins called 'Bhiladi', so the name.

The region has ancient history. It finds mention in the Mahabharta period. Evidences have pointed out towards human presence in the region even in prehistoric period. The city is said to have come up somewhere towards the middle of the 11th century. It is believed that the very Ist 'Bhil' settlers built a Shiva Temple here at the site of the present day Bhada Mandir or Jataun ka Mandir.

The library was established in 1954. Initially it was operational from the Sarkari Darwaza area of the city till 1987 when it was shifted to the Soochna Kendra. In 2006 it was shifted to the present location on the Rajendera Marg.

Building

The library has its own building spread over an area of 180 X 140 sqr.feet. For convenience purpose the building has been divided into different sections. The sections are Children Section, Women Section, Periodical Section-cum-Reading Room and Librarian's Room. The Stack Room spans over two storeys.

Location

Bilwara is located at at distance of about 510 Kms from the national capital New Delhi and about 250 Kms from state capital Jaipur.

The district is bound on the north by Ajmer District, on the east is the Bundi district, on the south by Chittorgarh & Udaipur districts and on the west by Rajsamand district. in the north-west, west and south-west by Udaipur district.

The library is located in the Gopal Ganj area on the Rajendra Road. It is at a distance walking distance from the city railway station and about 0.5 Kms from the city bus stand.

Collection

The library has a rich collection of 52,000+ books. The whole collection has been divided into many general and special collections arranged according to DDC-19 classification scheme with a bound register catalogue.

The library subscribes to 8 newspapers in English & Hindi and around 125 magazines.

Membership

The library has around 457 registered active members for the 2011-12 session jointly till now.

The library offers membership for a period of one session (1st April to 31st March) and is renewable thereafter. The membership fee is as under,

  • Adults Rs 20 (Rs. 2 form price)

Information Technology

The library has one computer for office work along with other Audio Visual material in the children section.

Working Hours

The library remains closed on every Tuesday. The library timings vary according to the season.

  • Summer (Ist April to 30th September) 12:00 noon to 8:00 pm
  • Winter (Ist October to 31st March) 11:00 am to 7:00 pm
