Rajkya Sarvajanik Zila Pustakalya (District Library), Dungarpur


Origin

Dungarpur is a town and district headquarter of the district with the same name in Rajsthan state of India. It is supposed to have been founded towards the end of the 14th century by Rawal Bir Singh, who named it after Dungaria, an Bhil chieftain whom he got murdered.

The library was started way back in 1906 as Gandhi Pustakalya. It was named after some local famous personality with surname Gandhi. Later it was renamed as Ducat Library before it got the present name and status of a district library in 1957.

Building

The library has a double storey building spread on an area of about 4000 sq. feet. The ground floor has a big hall and two stores. The Ist floor has the Librarian's Room, two Stack Roomss, Reading Room, Circulation Desk etc.

Location

Dungarpur is at a distance of about 780 Kms from the national capital New Delhi and around 510 Kms from state capital Jaipur.

The library is located in the center of the city in the Marwari School Garden.

Collection

The library has a rich collection of 42,300+ books. The whole collection has been divided into many general and special sub-collections arranged according to DDC-19 classification scheme. A major part of collection has been catalogued using e-pustakalya software.

The library also maintains a small but valuable collection of rare books which have been scanned and converted into digital format for future preservance.

The library subscribes to 12 newspapers in English & Hindi and 48 magazines.

Membership

The library offers membership for a period of one session (1st April to 31st March) and is renewable thereafter. The membership fee is as under,

  • Adults Rs 21 (form price Rs 1)

Information Technology

The library has three computers with internet access for office use and automating its collection. A considerable part of the library collection has been catalogued using e-pustakalya and the work is in progress. The library also has some audio-visual equipment for its children section.

Working Hours

The library remains closed on every Tuesday. The library timings vary according to the season.

  • Summer (Ist April to 30th September) 12:00 noon to 8:00 pm
  • Winter (Ist October to 31st March) 11:00 am to 7:00 pm
