Rajkya Sarvajanik Zila Pustakalya (District Library), Jaisalmer
Origin
Jaisalmer is the district headquarter of the biggest district of Rajasthan, Jaisalmer. It is 270 Kms in breadth and 186 Kms in length. On the south-west the district shares its border with Pakistan. The international border runs 471 Kms. It lies in the heart of the Thar desert.
Jiasalmer got its name from the name of its founder king Maharaja Jaisal Singh, who founded it in 1156 AD. Jaisalmer means 'the Hill Fort of Jaisal'. It is also famous as the 'Golden City of India' due to the abundance of yellow sand and yellow sandstone artichetural structures in the area.
The library was established in 1961.
Building
The library has a double storey building. The ground floor accomodates Reading Room, Children Section, Women's Section and Periodical Section etc. The Ist floor has the book stacks.
Location
Jaisalmer is located at a distance of about 780 Kms from national capital New Delhi and about 580 Kms from state capital Jaipur.
The library is located near the Hanumaan Circle (Chowk), about 500 meters from the city bus stand and about 3Kms from the railway station.

Collection
The library has a rich collection of 39,000+ books. The whole collection has been divided into many general and special collections arranged according to DDC-19 classification scheme. The process of automation is underway using E-pustakalya.
The library subscribes to 9 newspapers in English & Hindi and 60 magazines.

Membership
The library has around 167 registered active members for this session.
The library offers membership for a period of one session (1st April to 31st March) and is renewable thereafter. The membership fee is as under,
Membership Fee: - Adults Rs 21 (form price Rs 2 extra)
- Children (5-14 years) Rs 21 (form price Rs 2 extra)
Information Technology
The library has two computers that are being used for routine office work and automation of library operations. The automation of the library operations is underway with e-pustakalya software. The library has internet connectivity.
Working Hours
The library remains closed on every Tuesday. The library timings vary according to the season.
- Summer (Ist April to 30th September) 12:00 noon to 8:00 pm
- Winter (Ist October to 31st March) 11:00 am to 7:00 pm
