Rajkya Saravjanik Zila Pustakalya (District Library), Sawai Madhopur

Origin

Sawai Madhopur is the district headquarter of the district with the same name. The town was established by Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh I of Jaipur in 1765 AD as a planned city and was named after him. The history of the town dates back to medieval period. Today the region is famous for Ranthambhore wildlife reserve and the historical Ranthambhore fortress inside it. The town is also famous as 'Tiget City'.

The library was estalished in the year 1956 by the state government as District Library. In the beginning it was started in a building in Sonarka Kotla. Later it was shifted to its present location which is more spacious.

Building

The library has a single storey building. The building was being used as Jain Temple but afer the independence of India it was taken over by the state administration and converted into this library. The building has a spacious reading room, stack room, reference section, librarian's room.

Location

Ajmer is located at a distance of 375 Kms (approx.) from national capital New Delhi and 150 Kms (Approx.) from state capital Jaipur.

The library is located on the Purani Jail Road near the Sooraj Cinema Chowm

Collection

The library has rich collection of 40000+ books. The whole collection has been divided into many general and special collections arranged according to DDC-19 classification scheme with AACR2 catalogue. The process of automation is underway using E-pustakalya.

The library subscribes 10 newspapers in English & Hindi and 60 magazines.

Membership

The library has around 150 registered active members for this session.

The library offers membership for a period of one session (1st April to 31st March) and is renewable thereafter. There is a nominal membeship fee.

Membership Fee:

• Adults Rs 21 (form price Rs 1 extra)
• Children (5-14 years) Rs 21 (form price Rs 1 extra)

Information Technology

The library makes use of computer for office work. The automation of library operations is underway. The library is connected through internet.

Working Hours

The library remains closed on every Tuesday. The library timings vary according to the season.

• Summer (I^st April to 30^th September) 12:00 noon to 8:00 pm
• Winter (I^st October to 31^st March) 11:00 am to 7:00 pm
