Mahatama Gandhi Rajkya Sarvajanik Zila Pustakalya (District Library), Tonk
Origin
Tonk is the district headquarter of the Tonk district of Rajsthan state. It is a historical town. It finds mention in Mahabharata period as Samwad Lakshya. It was ruled by Maryas and Harsh Vardhan. The town was named by Bola Brahmin. He was given 12 villages of Tokra janpad after King Man Singh of Jaipur conquered Tari & Tokra Janpad during the reign of Akbar. Before independence of India Tonk was capital of an princely state ruled by Nawabs. So it is famous as Nawabi Nagri. The founder of the state was Muhammad Amir Khan.
The library was started by a local Nawab as a private home library in 1949 in his haveli. Later around 1951-52 it was named Khaliya Public Library and was shifted to many different rented locations. It was converted to District Public Library by the local administration in 1961. At that time the library had mixed collection in Hindi literature and Urdu, Arbic and Farsi literature related to Muslim religion according to the taste of its founder. In 1961 the Urdu, Arabic and Farsi collection was given to Arabic-Farsi Research Centre (APRI) and the district library started with the remaining collection.
Building
The library was started in the Haweli of its founder. Later it was shifted to many different rented locations in the city till 1989, when it was provided its own building by the administration, where it stands today.
The building has a Reading Room-cum-Stack Room, Librarian's Room, Office and Store.
Location
Tonk is situated on National Highway No. 12 at distance of about 350 Kms from national capital New Delhi and about 100 Kms from state capital Jaipur.
The library is located on the Jail Road near District Education Office. It is about 3 Kms from the city Bus Stand.

Collection
The library has rich collection of 48600+ books. The whole collection has been divided into many general and special collections arranged according to DDC-19 classification scheme with CCC catalogue. The process of automation is underway using E-pustakalya.
The library subscribes to 12 newspapers in English & Hindi and 60 magazines.

Membership
The library has around 125 registered active members for this session.
The library offers membership for a period of one session (1st April to 31st March) and is renewable thereafter. The the membership fee is as under,
Membership Fee: - Adults Rs 30 (form price Rs 1 extra)
- Children (5-14 years) Rs 30 (form price Rs 1 extra)
Information Technology
The library has one computer. The automation of library operations is underway.
Working Hours
The library remains closed on every Tuesday. The library timings vary according to the season.
- Summer (Ist April to 30th September) 12:00 noon to 8:00 pm
- Winter (Ist October to 31st March) 11:00 am to 7:00 pm
