District Library, Una (HP)

Origin

Una District was carved out of the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh along with Hamirpur District on Ist September, 1972 The region has a long history of being ruled by different powers from time to time. The longest (600 years approx.) being by Katoch family of Kangra under the name Jaswan Dun. The others who ruled the region include Gurkhas, Sikhs, Rajputs and Britishers etc.

The library was established as Tehsil Library in the year 1972. It was upgraded to the present status of District Library in the year 1987.

Building

District Library, Una

The library was started at Govt. Boys School in 1972 as Tehsil Library. It was shifted to many other places after that including main market near Old Hospital and Deputy director Office etc. A special building was constructed for the library and it was handed over to the library in the year 1993.

The library has two storey beautifull building. The building is located to the south of the famous S D Grounds and the main entrance opens into the Grounds. Many other educational institutes share the same grounds. Its a education hub in the city.

The ground floor has the Stacks Room-cum-circulation desk, reception desk, reading room and a store.

The Ist floor has the Librarian's Room, Reference-cum-technical section, Private reading room and Newspapers File section.

Location

District Library, Una

Una city is located in the south-western part of Himachal Pradesh and shares its border with the neighbouring state Punjab. It has an average elevation of 369 metres and unlike the rest of the districts in the state its comparatively plain with only few foothills. It is located at a distance of 140 Km (approx.) from Chandigarh, 375 Km (approx.) from national capital Delhi and 135 Km (approx) from state capital Shimla.

The library is located to the south of the famous S D Grounds and the main entrance opens into the Grounds. Many other educational institutes share the same grounds. Its a education hub in the city. It is five minutes walk from the main bus stand of the city.

The library has rich collection of 30,000+ books. The library subscribes to 9 newspapers in English and Hindi and 4 magazines.

Membership

District Library, Una(HP)

The library has 1790 members registered till now. The library offers membership for a period of 3 years and is renewable thereafter. There is no membership fee, but a refundable security needs to be paid at the time of Ist registration. This secutiry is carried forward during periodical renewals.

Membership Security (Refundable):

  • Adults Rs 200
  • Children (14 years or below) Rs 50

Information Technology

The library makes use of 3 computers for office work but the library operations are not automated yet.

The library also maintains a audio-visual collection and required equipment to play them as a learning aid for its young readers.

Working Hours

District Library, Una

Apart from the gazetted holidays the library remains closed on every Tuesday and last Saturday of the month. The library timings vary according to the season.

  • Summer (Ist April to 30th September) 11:00 am to 6:00 pm
  • Winter (Ist October to 31st March) 10:00 am to 5:00 pm
