Origin

Amritsar is the spirtual and cultural centre of the Sikh religion as it is home to the Harmandir Sahib, also known as Golden Temple. The city was founded by Guru Ram Das in 1574 on land brought by him for 700 rupees from the owners of the village of Tung. But the construction work on Santokhsar Sarovar (Holy Tank) had already been started in 1564 near village of Sultanwind by the Guru. It was completed in 1588. Amritsar is also famous for the Jalianwala Bagh Massacre in 1919 and Operation Bluestar in 1984. The city is the last major border town on Indian side on the indo-pak border and is just 32 kms from Lahore in Pakistan.
