District Library Gurdaspur

Origin

The city of Gurdaspur was founded by Guriya Ji in the beginning of 17th century and so it was named after him as Gurdaspur. Guriya Ji was a Sanwal Brahmin of Kaushal gotra and his ancestors came from Ayodhaya long time ago and had settled in Paniar village 5 kilometers away from Gurdaspur. He brought land for Gurdaspur from Jats of Sangi Gotra. At that time some people used to live there in huts.

The Library was established on 22nd September 1966. It was started at a building near Bus Stand in the Market. The roundabout there is still known as Library Chowk. Recently the library was shifted to its new location as the old building was quite old and worn out.

Building

The Library has recently moved to its new building in the civil lines area, near the fish park. This building has been specially constructed for the library on the land alloted to it by the district administration.

The building is single storey and covers an area of 6 canals and 7marle. The entrance faces east. On entering one enters the Reading Room with the Circulation Desk attached to it. On the right of it is the Librarian's Room and the Office. On the left are the Toilets. Just move straight and you enter the Stack Room Area.

Location

Gurdaspur is the northern most district of Punjab. The city Gurdaspur is 462 Kms from Delhi and 250 Kms from Chandigarh, the capital of Punjab. The Library is located in the Civil Lines area of the City. It is located on the Railway road near Panchayat Bhawan. Other landmarks are Fish Park, Panch Peer and Jahaj Chowk.
