District Library Mohali

Origin

District Library Mohali was established in June, 1989. It was first started in a building provided by the Govt. College Mohali but later shifted to the present location. This building was provided by the Public Works Department. Since then its serving its clientele from this building.

Building

The library occupies a building that was provided rent free by the local administration at the Public Health Complex, Water Works, Industrial Phase-I. The building is well designed but not so spacious compared to the collection and services offered by the library.

The building is single story. The entrance faces west. The entrance door leads you to the central room that is Reading Room. The room on the left is Librarian-cum-Office room and this room has the tiolet attached to it. On the right is the Stack Room. The Stack Room is joined to the Central Reading room through the passage through the Technical Section that is in the south-eastern direction from the Reading Room. In between the toilets and the Technical Section there is a Store.

Location

The Library is located at Public Health Complex, Water Works, Industrial Phase - I in Mohali. The library is located in the middle. On the one side is the residential area and on the other side is the Industrial area.Mohali is a prosperous city in Punjab. Its prosperity is mainly due to its location. It shares its border with Chandigarh which is not only capital of Punjab and Haryana but also a Union Teritory (administered by Govt. of India). In fact it may be called the Satellite city of chandigarh. So,Mohali is the Ist city of Punjab that we enter when we enter Punjab from Chandigarh side. Till recently Mohali was part of the Ropar district, but now it has been given a District status by the Punjab Govt.

Collection

The library has a colleciton of about 25,000(approx.) documents. In addition to this the library also subscribes to many other newspapers and magazines.

Membership

The library has more than 800 registered members. Rules and regulations regarding the membership and the membership and renew forms are common for all the libraries in the PPLS. These can be accessed and downloaded from here.
