District Library Sangrur
Origin
District Library Sangrur was established in 1912 in the Colonial era. In those days Sangrur was capital of Jind State and was ruled by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Most probably this library was not known as district library but was just a public library. In those days the library was situated near DC office but later in Oct. 1971 it was shifted to the present building which was especially designed for the purpose.
Though the library has shifted to its new location the furniture (especially the wooden almirahs, which almost touch the ceiling) are still there. These have been very artistically designed. Later on this library was taken over by the State Govt. and converted into a District Library and eventually it became a part of the PPLS.
Building
The library covers an area of 3.7 acres (approx.). The building is two storey and has been designed very specifically according to the needs of the library. It faces East. Its quite spacious.
The ground floor consists of Reading Room, Reference Section, Urdu Section, Circulation Desk, Office and Store.
The first floor is occupied by the Stack Room. In one corner there is the technical section. This floor is reachable using a ramp.
This building is surrounded by clean and green open space. In one corner there is an Open Air Theatre constructed recently by the local adminstration to encourage cultural activities in the local people.
